Book Tracks

I recently stumbled upon a site, can’t really remember how, maybe Reddit, called Book Tracks. It’s an interesting new way to look at reading. One that, as an artist, I’ve thought much about myself. Thought I would imagine getting it to be just right could be very challenging.

Book Tracks, for those of you who don’t know, is way to add audio to books. This audio can range from music to simple sounds; such as the creaking of a door or the thumping of boas against the docks. It’s a way to add extra depth to a novel. An extra sense to really pull you in.

Though i’m all for this, as almost everyone walks around with a Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in their pockets, I could see it causing a ripple in throughout the writing/reading community. Will a Book Track book be considered a book? Novels are works of words and the readers imagination. A novel doesn’t have sounds.

Book Tracks bridges the gap between reading and listening. How will a Book Track book be categorized? Is half way to a radio show isn’t it? Can it be considered a novel among your typical everyday non audio version? Or will it end up being flagged like a picture book.

We’ll have to wait and see. But I for one am exciting to finally see technology used. It’s part of what makes advancement great.

I Am Groot

Guardians of the Galaxy! Haven’t seen it? Then drop whatever you’re doing and go the the movies right now. Tell your boss it’s a pop culture emergency and that you can fix those damn blinking lights tomorrow. If that doesn’t work, just shout “I am Groot.” and leave. It’ll probably work.

At any rate, Marvel studios has once again proved itself to be top notch. Each movie they’ve rolled out over the past couple years has gotten better and better. And now we have two great films from them in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. As a fan of super-heroes and comics, it gets you really excited for what’s next.

Prior to seeing the movie, my knowledge of Guardians of the Galaxy was nothing. And from the second the movie started with Star-Lord dancing around through the Indiana Jones-esc ruins, I was hooked. Comedy blended perfectly into the overall story of the movie without the over-forcing that has plagued many comic book movies in the past. For some reason it just fit in very situation. Of course a psychotic raccoon and plant-being help it a bit.

It’s also great to see how vast the Marvel universe actually is. The main plot clearly has ties to the rest of what’s going on in the universe. Thanos makes a good appearance; as well as the Collector. It’ll be interesting to see if the Guardians make any appearances with any of the Avengers or vice-versa down the pike.

Favorite Character(s): Groot (obviously) and Rocket. How can they not be? I really like their relationship. How they became a team might not be known yet, but you can definitely feel the emotion and brotherly bond between the two throughout the film. And Rocket in particular displays a lot of depth and room for character exploration.

I’ve seen people call it the next generation Star Wars and I can understand why. But will it be? There’s only one answer: I am Groot.
